Do You Know When Your Brakes Need Repair?

What Are the Different Kinds of Brakes?
One of the most invaluable aspects of a vehicle is the brake system. Brakes are responsible for safely bringing your car to a stop, which is why it’s imperative to ensure yours are always in optimal condition. Here at Dynamic Automotive, you can count on us for expert brake maintenance and brake repair in Frederick, Maryland. In general, there are two different types of brakes: disc and drum. In a vehicle with disc brakes, the master cylinder provides the hydraulic pressure needed for the calipers to compress the brake pads on both sides of the rotor, creating friction that allows the vehicle to stop. Conversely, a drum brake works by hydraulic pressure pressing the two brake shoes to the brake drum when the brake pedal is engaged. This friction lets the vehicle slow and stop. Vehicles also have two other types of brakes equipped: emergency and anti-lock. Emergency brakes work are used to keep a vehicle stationary when parked or when a vehicle’s main brake system fails, while anti-lock brakes prevent the wheels from locking up in adverse conditions.
Common Brake Repair Jobs
Dynamic Automotive is no stranger to brake repair. We have seen it all and can do it all. When you bring your vehicle in, we’ll get right to work diagnosing the problem you are experiencing and inspecting the entire brake system. Common brake issues include worn, cracked, swollen, or leaking hoses or corroded, kinked, or damaged lines. Calipers or wheel cylinders that are leaking will need to be rebuilt or replaced, in addition to brake calipers that have seized up, become damaged, or corroded. We have the tools to replace shoes, lines, brake pads, rotors/discs, pistons, and master cylinders. If your vehicle requires “bleeding,” which is the process of draining the brake fluid and replacing it with a fresh supply, we can take care of that too.
How Do I Know If I Need Brake Service?
Oftentimes, you’ll be able to recognize when something is off with your brakes. Taking longer to stop, a sticking brake pedal, and abnormal noises are some of the most common tell-tale signs you may need brake repair. Brake pad replacement, for example, is normally needed every 20,000 to 50,000 miles, and common indicators include squealing or sticking brakes. If your vehicle becomes hard to stop, you may need a line replacement. Grinding usually yields to an issue with the brake rotors or discs, and shaking, pulling to one side, or loud noises when braking are signs of a complication with the brake drum. To prevent these problems from cropping up in the first place, we recommend routine brake service and inspection.
