Is It Oil?
Sort of. Synthetic motor oil is a lubricant that will protect your engine's moving parts, absorb a great deal of the heat generated through friction as your engine works, and trap/suspend dirt so that it is less likely to damage the metal engine parts. The base of the synthetic product starts as petroleum-like its conventional counterpart. However, this base is broken down beneath the molecular level, and the molecules are purposefully rebuilt. They are homogeneous (the same size). In contrast, the molecules of conventional lubricants vary in size (heterogeneous). Additives are then combined with stabilizing the product such that it resists breakdown and better protects the engine. Thus, synthetic oil begins life as a petroleum product. Still, it matures as a product that no longer resembles its original molecular form.
